Description and Notes
Fleet Data: The Pegasus class began in 687 AD with several designs all towards the common goal of an airship built on speed and using the latest in pulse cannon and torpedo technology. The frame of the Pegasus was completed rather quickly however the torpedo was not completed by DEC till 691, so the Pegasus sat in her paddock for three years alongside the finished frames of other Pegasus class airships. The Pegasus was first launched in 690, without it's torpedo launchers, to test the ship's performance and when the torpedo was finished, the launchers were built into the frame and the ship officially commissioned into service and sent into the Sirius/Shadow Knight front. The Pegasus was built as the successor to the Defender class Explorer (Which at the time was fielding it's 687 refit version) and as the fastest, most advanced ship in the Fleet. The Pegasus preformed admirably during the Sirius/Shadow Knight War and the following Damocles/Shadow Knight War as the Pegasus outraced her Shadow Knight peers, using the speed to take advantage of the slower, less gainly, Shadow Knight cruisers. After the war, the Pegasus served as the Fleet's flagship, till she was replaced by the Avenger and Marauder classes. After 698 AD, the Pegasus served as border patrol and Fleet support.

When the Damocles/Verax War broke out, the Pegasus class was placed back into the fray as Damocles was confident of this ship based on it's performance in the First War. Sadly, the Pegasus was not advanced enough to make any adequate defensive or offensive contribution to the Fleet, and in 705 AD, Damocles decided to retire the class but they didn't issue a full recall on the Pegasus line. Some still exist to this very day, on patrol assignments in peaceful areas such as inner Damocles or sometimes used to ferry needed supplies and personnel back and forth from Norcon, Canaris, Spearon, Weaver and Daguenet.

The Pegasus featured four pulse cannons and two torpedo launchers along the front bow, with half of the pulse cannons being type twos and the other half being more advanced type threes with better accuracy systems. However due to the power demand by other systems, the Pegasus usually relied on either the torpedo launchers, only firing pulse cannons when in close range, or diverted the power from the launchers and focused on the cannons instead. The two side cannons and the aft torpedo launcher helped to give the Pegasus better defense, and able to fight back when being pursued or make high speed passes torpedo firings as it approached an enemy firing the frontal launchers, then rushed past and fired the aft launcher. The Pegasus was deemed luxurious in those days, cause Damocles opted to remove the barracks and use quarter arrangements instead. Where 60 people had to cram together in one large barracks, now nearly everyone got their own quarters. The Pegasus proved superior in battle, and in 693 it worked very well with the 693 refit of the Defender class as a Pegasus and Defender would each attack a target, overwhelming the enemy with weapons fire.

The Pegasus sported amazing firepower, and was very agile for her time. However she was underpowered, so to last in a battle a Captain has to be very creative on stretching the power supply.

Portal Generator Variant: A few Pegasus were also outfitted with a Voyager Class Portal Generator and a Gyroscopic Stabilizer (+76 SU) how to accommodate this into the existing framework, torpedo capacity was lowered to 30, the grapplers were removed, the aft torpedo launcher was removed, The Type 3 Pulse Cannons swapped out for Type 2s with Class 2 Targeting Systems, One of the Emergency Teleporter Chambers was removed, Probe capacity lowered to 20, One Archive Crystal was removed, Port & Starboard Pulse Cannons were removed and one of the forward torpedo launchers was removed. This allowed the ship to open portals to new worlds, and Damocles used several to gather intelligence on the Shadow Knight worlds. As was the case, the Portal Generator-Equipped Pegasus would form a portal and other airships would either follow it, or use the Pegasus's portal instead to reach their destination. This variant was only used in intelligence gathering, and very rarely placed into battle. It took 11 weeks to refit a standard Pegasus with the specifications of this variant.

Tactical Analysis: The Pegasus's flaw is that during a fight, tactical systems take such a drain on power systems that the ship has to utilize all power systems to remain in the fight. Using the accepted Defender B as the test enemy, the Pegasus can withstand a full frontal salvo, with 4% Hull damage and shield grid collapse from one frontal salvo. In her counterstrike however, the Pegasus has to be selective with her firing options. Too many enemies at all sides tend to overload the ship and hamper what enemies it can hurt. Provided the Pegasus focuses on one firing arc at a time, it can remain in the fight. In this example, the Pegasus fired a full frontal salvo at the Defender, destroying a shield grid and causing 40% Hull damage. In situations where a Pegasus faces several foes at different firing arcs, usually it slows to gain more power. Pegasus works best in hit then evade turned tactics.

Noteworthy vessels/service records/encounters: D.I.S. Pegasus, DCC 800, launched to test the soundness of the Pegasus class in a patrol mission around Verdania (690), upgraded with torpedo launchers and then placed on the Sirius front (691), the Damocles/Shadow Knight front (694), responded to Axius distress signal at Waypoint (695), conduct diversionary tactics during General Windfire's raid on Galadore's Tower (695), refitted to Portal Generator variant & scout out Cerebus (696), Sirius (697) and preform two year survey mission on New Damocles (698-700). Underwent refitting back to standard version then placed on routine assignment (701), destroyed in the Battle of Weaver by Verax forces (704).; D.I.S. Accelros, DCC 802, launched (691), sent into the Sirius front. Lost in the Battle of Winchshire (692); D.I.S. Victory, DCC 0678-C, launched (698), decommissioned and placed as training ship (701); D.I.S. Talisman, DCC 823, launched (691), sent to locate missing Expedition Fleet ships (692), presumed lost/destroyed (695). D.I.S. Pearl, DCC 850, launched (691), sent to locate missing Expedition Fleet ships (692), presumed lost/destroyed (695).
